Lee Niel, AWFC board member since 2013, and AWFC Vice President as of April 2017, is an Assistant Professor at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. She is the Col K. L. Campbell Chair in Companion Animal Welfare, and is affiliated with the U of G’s Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare. Dr. Niel completed a BSc in Biology at Simon Fraser University, a PhD at the University of British Columbia in the Animal Welfare Program, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Niel teaches veterinary students about companion animal behaviour and welfare, and is also faculty co-mentor for the OVC student clubs for Small Animal Behaviour, and Animal Welfare. Her research is focused on developing novel methods for assessing and improving cat and dog welfare. Specifically, she is interested in understanding and preventing canine aggression, and in reducing stress and improving animal wellbeing in relation to veterinary care.
