APPLICATION SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March 1st
OVERVIEW
Universities across Canada may submit proposals to the AWFC for any lectures related to animal welfare that are promoted to the general public, as well as to the student body.
Historically, the AWFC has funded campus lectures hosted by UBC’s Animal Welfare Program and the University of Guelph’s veterinary school. However, the application process is open to any Canadian university and faculty that may have an interest in animal welfare issues (e.g. Faculties of Law, Medicine, Environmental Science, Centres for Applied Ethics, Journalism, etc.).
The Lectures series at UBC and Guelph were established to commemorate two individuals who were deeply concerned with the welfare of animals.
University of British Columbia – Stratton Memorial Lecture
Peter Stratton was a Vancouver businessman and philanthropist. As a major benefactor, he helped create the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada, serving as one of its original trustees in 1965. Mr. Stratton recognized the importance of establishing an independent foundation in Canada to provide an opportunity for funds to be held and used for the sole purpose of supporting, sponsoring and encouraging animal welfare work throughout the country. The UBC lecture series was named in his honour.
University of Guelph – Basil Capes Memorial Lecture
Basil Capes was associated with the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada for many years, serving as both Secretary and President of this organization. Basil was an architect by profession who had a passionate and abiding interest in animal welfare. In addition to his main architectural projects, he often designed animal shelters for Humane Societies and donated his time in this respect. He also donated books and papers on animal welfare to the University of Guelph Library. When he passed away, his family and friends established a lecture series in his name, with funding support from the AWFC.

HOW TO APPLY
Universities and the host faculty member(s) may email [email protected] by March 1st using this form. Funding decisions will be announced by the end of April.
Up to $2k in funding is available to help pay for costs related to travel or honorariums for guest speakers, as well as some promotion costs. AWFC does not pay for food and beverages served at such events.

- Speaker honorarium and travel costs
- Audio/Visual equipment rental
- Venue rental
- Event Marketing costs
WHAT WE DO NOT FUND:
- Event sponsorship
- Food/drink at events
- Bursaries and scholarships
- Costs for projects that have commenced or were completed prior to application
